Connectivity

Punishment was abandoned

as the connectivity of  leather and flesh

bound an afterlife unknown to sufferer’s purpose

with reaction

to youth’s imperfection

to maturity’s impurity

to mere joy in pain.

And how jealous the whip and straps

became when it was they who herded

the strays.

How in spirit there was more animus

than in fields

and the most since

the slaughterhouse.
