And This Is Why

Sitting on a Patio

It’s hard to tell if the fly survived

that was fished

from the cup he fell in

then

thus

flung

to the floor.

Buddha,

was that the way to do it?

(with many apologies to Ananse.)

Its chances were slim

but these fingers could change destiny-

could push back Kali and Krishna

Offset chaos

and let an invading force

escape clean.

All this thought

as the corners

of the eyes

keep catching paisleys passing by

on ties and blouses-

Tracks in the snow

fleeing from god-

but that story is unknown

in the law schools

and finance districts

of upstate New York.
