Back Pocket Book Entry 6

Standing in the shadow of a flower

in bloom

Where from a distance

one can see the ropes

thrown to heaven

to tether the big top

down upon this Earth

Trying to stretch each day’s

light

to converge here

on

the shivering

in wind,

glistening in dew,

and pensive

in the days

nearing

the freeze.

Standing in the shadow

of a flower

in bloom,

the trek across

orchards

and meadows

comes to an end

Each backstay of the sun

falls

here where the main mast

is planted

Resilient against all crests

till the clouds

part

under oppressive

crepuscular rays

Standing in the shadow

of a flower

in bloom

the ladder of Jacob

is eclipsed

by this vantage

and so

to ascend

means

climbing stalk,

leaves and petals

much less fragile than

they seem.

The thorns are rungs

and the sun

is futile

against this shade

So with clear sight

the first

challenge

on the way to heaven

is begun.
